Homemade fries without the "frying"?!?! Sign me UP! Rather than a sweet tooth, I find that I have a salty-tooth...Is that a thing? Well, my point is that I crave things like chips, fries and popcorn WAYY more than I crave sweets and baked goods. So, when those cravings hit, it's nice to have a recipe like this one up my sleeve that I can quickly whip up that is, for the most part, much healthier than what I would get if I ordered takeout. These *crispy* baked sweet potato fries are delicious on their own, but paired with the dipping sauce are out of this world. My biggest issue with homemade baked fries is that they are always soggy or limp when they come out of the oven, so I finally perfected this recipe to ensure that these babies are crispy when they are done. You need to make sure the fries are not crowded in the pan when they bake, so they crisp up rather than steam. The other key is to toss your fries in cornstarch BEFORE adding your oil and seasonings. Seems easy enough, right?! Try it out and you'll be so glad you did!
Ingredients:
2 sweet potatoes
2 tsp cornstarch
2 tbsp avocado oil
1 ½ tsp seasoned salt (I use Lawry’s)
1 tsp chili powder
½ tsp ground pepper
2 tbsp fresh parsley (optional)
Dipping Sauce:
⅓ C mayo
¼ C ketchup
½ tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Additional Supplies:
1-2 Large baking sheets
Parchment paper, foil or a silicone baking mat
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 425 deg (F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (or greased foil or silicone baking mat).
Cut your sweet potato into “matchstick” fries. Slice your sweet potato lengthwise into ½ inch thick slices. Then, take each slice and cut into ½ inch thick rectangles that resemble the shape of fries.
Place the cut sweet potatoes into a bowl. Sprinkle cornstarch over the sweet potatoes, and stir with tongs until evenly coated. Add avocado oil and stir. Add seasoned salt, chili powder and pepper. Stir again until the fries are evenly coated.
Place on your baking sheet in one even layer, making sure your fries are not crowded or touching. I suggest baking them in 2 batches if you only have 1 sheet pan. If you have 2 sheet pans, divide the fries between the two pans and cook simultaneously in the oven.
Place in the oven and bake for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, remove from the oven, and using a spatula, flip the fries, then return to the oven for 10-12 minutes until they are nice and crispy!
While the fries bake, make your fry dipping sauce. Whisk together your mayo, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce and set aside.
Remove sweet potato fries from the oven, toss in fresh parsley and additional salt if needed. Serve with dipping sauce!
